“This virus is not going away, we need to figure out how to live our lives and how to educate our students with the virus being present,” he said. If they can do it, then we can too,” the senator said.

“Since Hurricane Harvey, the City of Port Aransas has worked tirelessly with FEMA representatives to identify damages and move recovery projects forward. Unfortunately, the city’s public safety building and fire station remain in their post-Harvey condition, forcing first responders to operate out of temporary mobile office units unsuitable for long-term operations,” said Senator Cornyn. “This is especially troubling for the city now that COVID-19 and the new hurricane season are a constant threat to public health and safety.”

Several schools in the Houston area will receive a number of federal grants totaling $2,980,739 to serve their Hispanic and underrepresented student populations, U.S. Senator John Cornyn announced. The grant funding comes from the U.S. Department of Education’s Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions Program, and it is anticipated that each grant will be sustained for a total of 5 years. “In Texas, more than one in three individuals identify as Hispanic, and I am proud to support Hispanic-Serving Institutions and their contributions to our state’s growing Hispanic community,” said Sen. Cornyn. “Quality education and diverse environments benefit everyone, and especially during these tough times I applaud Houston area schools for their work to secure these grants to better serve their students.”

“In some parts of the state, as many as a third of the students don’t have access to Wi-Fi or broadband and while Congress appropriated billions of dollars, you know, there’s a difference between snapping your fingers and actually having it implemented,” he said. “It takes some time, and I am worried in the meantime, some of these kids from low income families are falling further and further behind.” He also visited classes at both Canyon and Randall High Schools, helping to teach a lesson on government.

Saint Jo VFD receives $145K CARES Act grant

A federal grant to improve operations and safety measures has been awarded to the Saint Jo Volunteer Fire Department, according to The Bowie News. U.S. Sen. John Cornyn announced the money was appropriated through the CARES Act and totals at more than $145,000. The grant also comes through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, which is a program that aims to strengthen nation’s preparedness and ability to respond to fires and other similar hazards.
