Senator John Cornyn has been makin’ news and fightin’ for Texans this week.

Senator John Cornyn visited the Rio Grande Valley on Tuesday to discuss the COVID-19 response.
During a press conference at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), Sen. Cornyn announced that entities in the Rio Grande Valley have been administered a total of $530 million in federal COVID-19 relief resources from Congress.

The SAFE TO WORK Act, introduced July 27 by Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) as part of a $1 trillion package of bills making up the HEALS)Act, would protect healthcare providers — including entities and individuals who work for them — for almost five years from lawsuits related to the provision of COVID-19-related care and services, except in cases of “gross negligence or willful misconduct.” “These crucial protections would safeguard healthcare workers, providers, and facilities, as well as businesses, non-profit organizations, and educational institutions against unfair lawsuits so they can continue to contribute to a safe and effective economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Valley leaders meet with Sen. John Cornyn to discuss COVID-19, new school year

U.S. Senator John Cornyn, R-Texas, visited the Rio Grande Valley on Tuesday to meet with local leaders.
Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr. spoke with Cornyn about the upcoming school year and COVID-19. Representatives from all four Valley counties, as well as many hospitals, met with the senator. They agreed the Valley needs more funding to help control the spread of COVID-19. County judges told the senator they are seeing heartbreaking numbers of deaths and positive cases.
Other leaders voiced concerns about the upcoming school year. Many said they’re afraid the Valley will see another surge of cases if students are forced to attend in-person classes.

Last month, for the first time, the House of Representatives passed a bill that would establish a National Museum of the American Latino. It was done with bipartisan support by voice vote. The next step would be passage of the version in the Senate, where the lead sponsor is Sen. John Cornyn of Texas. Cornyn should be commended for not only taking the lead on the Latino museum but also co-sponsoring legislation that would make Juneteenth a national holiday.
“Austin City Council’s decision to drastically defund our police department is reckless and dangerous. I have spent a lot of time listening to city leaders lately, including roundtable discussions with law enforcement, faith and community leaders in Dallas and Houston. Those conversations have instilled in me that we need to bring communities and police departments closer together. Sadly, the City of Austin just drove that wedge deeper in what amounts to a shameful failure to fulfill their obligations to public safety.”
Cornyn: MSU Texas to receive $262K federal grant

MSU Texas is set to receive a federal grant for higher education, according to Sen. John Cornyn. The funds are for the university to be able to provide first-generation and low-income college students with financial assistance and academic support services to help them complete their postsecondary educations. “As our students prepare to return to their studies, it is critical they are provided with the resources necessary to succeed and continue achieving academic milestones,” said Sen. Cornyn. “I’ll continue to do everything in my power to ensure opportunities for students in Wichita Falls aren’t taken away due to these times of economic uncertainty.”
KC program awarded $1.3M federal grant

Sen. John Cornyn announced that the Kilgore College TRIO program will receive $1,371,980 in “Federal Grants for Higher Education” to continue its services through 2025.
Funding from the grants will allow the TRIO program at KC to continue its mission of providing financial assistance and academic support services to first-generation, low income and disabled students.
