Senator John Cornyn visits Parkland Middle School
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) made a stop at Parkland Middle School Tuesday afternoon to visit with students in the district’s GEAR UP program.
The program is currently a partnership with UTEP and Ysleta ISD that seeks to increase college and career readiness for underrepresented and low-income students.
Cornyn is seeking support for a bipartisan GEAR UP for Success Act legislation that would make improvements to the current program that requires school districts to match grant dollars that could be burdensome on many school district budgets.
“This legislation would allow school districts to better cater to their students’ specific needs rather than using a one-size-fits-all program, and it would reduce the local cost-share required by half,” Cornyn said.
