U.S. Senator John Cornyn travels to El Paso this week
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – United States Senator John Cornyn is planning on visiting El Paso this week, according to a press release. Cornyn, who represents Texas, previewed his visits to El Paso, Laredo, Austin and Abilene on the Senate floor Thursday.
“Some of the things I’ll be talking about as I travel from El Paso to Laredo include the GEAR UP for Success Act with students, teachers, and school administrators. GEAR UP seeks to increase college and career readiness for underrepresented and low-income students,” said Cornyn. “This legislation would allow school districts to better cater to their students’ specific needs rather than using a one-size-fits-all program, and it would reduce the local cost-share required by half. I’m eager to hear from my constituents in El Paso and Laredo and talk about what else we can do in Washington to promote college and career readiness.”
In addition to the GEAR UP program, Cornyn once again addressed the immigration crisis at the southern border, citing recent Customs and Border Protection numbers of increased family asylum cases and a lack of adequate space to safely house immigrants entering the country.
It is unclear what day this week Cornyn is expected in El Paso. A full schedule of Cornyn’s visit has not been released. KTSM will update this story as soon as a formal announcement on his travel plans is made public.
